English

Autumn Term

This term we have been studying the story 'The Invention of Hugo Cabret' which is about an orphan boy in 1930s Paris who lives secretly in a train station, maintaining its clocks while trying to repair a broken automaton left by his late father, hoping it holds a message. We used our Year 5 writing skills when creating imaginative setting descriptions and an informative newspaper report about a tragic fire.

We have also used our persuasive writing skills when writing about Paris in our attempts to encourage people to visit the magnificent city.

Maths

Autumn Term

This term we have looked at the following topics within our Maths lessons:

  • Place value
  • Place value (decimals)
  • Comparing numbers to 1,000,000

History

In History this term, we have been looking at The Islamic Golden Age which was a time from about 800 to 1400 CE when the world made important discoveries and inventions. Scholars studied Science, Maths, medicine, astronomy, art, and literature. They translated old Greek and Roman books and added new ideas of their own.

We learnt about how Baghdad became the centre of learning where people from different cultures shared knowledge. We also researched what was invented during this time period such as algebra, hospitals, advanced surgery tools, and detailed maps.

Geography

In Geography this term, we have been learning how England is divided into areas called counties. Counties help organise places and services, such as schools and roads. Each county has its own towns, cities and countryside. Some counties are large and rural, with farms and villages, while others have big cities. There are 48 counties in England. Learning about counties has helped us to understand how England is organised and counties can differ from each other.

Science

In the first half of this term, the children have been learning that a force is a push or a pull which can change how objects move. They explored pushes and pulls and how stronger forces make objects move faster or further. We also learned about friction, which happens when surfaces rub together and slows objects down, with rough surfaces creating more friction than smooth ones. They also studied air resistance, a type of friction that acts on objects moving through the air and slows them down, especially when the surface area is larger. We explored this through an experiment using paper airplanes!

In the second part of our term, we have been learning about space, focusing on the planets in our solar system and gravity. They learned that the Sun is at the centre of the solar system and that the planets orbit it. We explored the differences between the planets, such as size and distance from the Sun.

They also learned about gravity, the force that pulls objects towards each other. They discovered that gravity keeps us on Earth and holds the planets in their orbits. Overall, the children have been learning how gravity and the solar system work together in space.
